Renick Bell is a composer and one half of the duo The Third Second (with Jason Landers). He has also composed music with Junichi Uesugi. Bell’s experimental work began with his introduction to the digital studio in 1994. Under the guidance of Dr. Steve Paxton, Bell began composing pieces that developed from electronic rock to more free-form explorations of sound. Bell moved to New York City in the fall of 1999, where he co-composed the score to Spun, a contemporary dance theater piece, with Kevin Wheeler and Aaron Nisbit. In the spring of 2001, Bell relocated to the mountains south of Taipei, Taiwan, and composed Seven Studies. After completing Seven Studies, he began work on Three Paths, which was completed in August of 2001. Bell moved to Tokyo, Japan in 2006 and currently lives there. Releases by Renick Bell include:

Deserts of Sound is the outlet for Jason Landers’ solo music: ambient soundscapes, noise textures, warped beats, spatial sounds, and others. Jason Landers is one half of the duo The Third Second. His compositions vary between sequenced pieces and live improvisations. Landers began working on electronic music in 1994 in Lubbock, Texas. He played in a psych/punk band in late 1997, where he met Renick Bell (the other half of The Third Second) Several pieces were released in 2000 on the Architecture and Other Musics compilation. Landers had one solo piece on the Fortunate Plasma Gathering compilation, released by Spatial Records in 2000. Those pieces have been compiled as The Cerebral Grassland EP. He moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 2000.

Originally a progressive rocker and fusion bassist with a Pastorius predilection, he started his own direction to compensate for what he felt his ears lacked. After a period of multitrack experimentation in his 20s, his music was put on hold for work and family.

After restarting making music 15 years ago, Muchos Pantaloons represents one half of the year of his musical regimen, which is part of a larger musical plan. In spring and autumn, he can be found in parks honing his acoustic instrumental skills and laying down tracks on a portable multitrack recorder. The instruments are wide-ranging, including fretless bass, kalimba, steel drums, bottles, and even original instruments of his own construction. This park practice is exactly that, practice, a discipline, to improve according to his chosen path, getting things in a regular “orbit” which he can maintain as long as he's alive.

A site redesign has just gone live today. If you are having trouble finding something on the site, try the improved search function via the text field at the top of the page. You can also check the artist list or release list:

artist list: http://the3rd2nd.com/wiki/doku.php?id=artist_list

release list: http://the3rd2nd.com/wiki/doku.php?id=release_list

Finally, at the bottom of the page, there is an “Index” button which will display a list of all of the pages on the site.

YATE presents a short improvised session on Arp and other instruments.

Vintagesynth.com tells us of the Arp:

“The ARP 2600 is without a doubt one of the finest analog synthesizers ever. It is very popular and has been used by artists for over 20 years in all forms of music, especially today's electronic music. The 2600 is a professional, semi-modular, monophonic, patch-cable synthesizer that competed directly against the first professional Modular Moog synths during the early 1970's. Unlike other modular systems of the time which required you to pick and choose modules that you (or the manufacturer) then had to mount inside a case and wire together, the 2600 is semi-modular with a fixed selection of basic synth modules internally pre-wired and ready to go! Most of these connections can be “re-wired” with patch-cords and clearly labeled patch-points. This made the 2600 more user-friendly, portable and easier to create sounds with!”

This is the Third Second’s debut album and this site’s most-downloaded release: six tracks of ambient sounds, manipulated improvisations, and noise. The duo recorded many free-form improvisational performances of the duo or larger groups of musicians. These performances were sampled, processed, and mixed into these six tracks. It was released in 1999 on Sugarpush Records and re-released on the3rd2nd.com in 2002. The Cult of the Dead Cow re-released it in 2006.

Reviews:
“A complete mind-fuck of an album. Dense, horrific soundscapes, alien aural textures and erratic rhythms combine to form one of the most intense ambient experiments caught on tape in recent memory. It’s well worth the brain cells you’ll kill listening to it.” - CMJ

“An exploration of unconventional sounds–impure and unsimple–this disc of electro-acoustic recordings draws inspiration from Morton Subotnick, Richard Maxfield and other avatars of experimental music. Deep and disorienting stuff.” - Alternative Press #130, May 1999

These seven short electronic pieces were composed by Renick Bell during the summer of 2001. They are the sketches for Three Paths. A collection of soundfiles was mangled with Metasynth and Soundhack and collaged to create brief ambient soundscapes and noise collages as tests for the longer soundworks in Three Paths. This was released on this site in 2002.

Composed by Renick Bell during the summer of 2001, Bell wanted to experiment with long forms with varying dynamics. Each track originates in a single sound file. Those original files were not sampled or recorded, but digitally generated by granular or FM synthesis. Many versions of that sound file were created by using various signal processing methods. The versions were similarly processed, creating a larger collection of files. These files were then arranged into evolving digital soundscapes. These pieces mark the end of a period of work beginning with Seven Studies. This was released by the3rd2nd.com in 2002.

This EP compiles several Deserts of Sound tracks from compilations released in 2000. These three tracks were composed in the late 90s. One track appeared on the Fortunate Plasma Gathering compilation, released by Spatial Records in 2000. All three tracks appeared on the Architecture and Other Musics compilation, also released by Spatial Records in 2000. DOS’s music here explores sequenced and live ambient soundscapes.

Listen to two recently excavated tracks of scattered rhythms and iridescent textures. Unearthed from the detritus of 2003, here are sides A and B of Finding Balance, a previously unreleased EP by The Third Second. These two sequenced tracks swim through similar atmospheres as Dynamic Adrenal Challenge but in denser strata.

Fragmented treble traffic and rounded broad bass await nothing but your right clicking and saving as from the links below.

This EP by 05 Shambolic Scattered chews on some aged breakbeat scraps. After being shredded and reguritated, synthetic sauce make them spicy but palatable. With the added garnish of melody, it becomes fine dining.

Various drum break samples were processed repeatedly, chopped up, and processed more. MIDI files were mangled, transposed, and recorded. All of the samples were arranged and mixed down, and then those mixes were cut apart and re-processed. These tracks are four of the final mixdowns of those experiments.

Prolegomenon is a YATE performance live from a parking lot at 5th Ave. and Van Buren in Phoenix, Arizona. In these live electronic improvisations, Rob Kilman and Jason Landers manipulate drum machines, keyboards, and other instruments through a variety of effects processors. The result is music that is simultaneously melodic and noisy. It provides a good document of Yate’s focus on live improvisation, which can also be heard on their releases Phases of Phantoms and The Watching Machine.

This live laptop set from 05 Shambolic Scattered in Taipei, Taiwan staggers at about 140 bpm through beats, industrial soundscapes, and occasionally melodic leads. Drums are mangled. Songs are broken and stitched back together. Forms are smashed into noise, and noises are chained together. Beginning furiously, the right ears will find the satisfaction of having walked a difficult road at the end of these 80 minutes. Imagine the pungent odor of fried fermented tofu and motorcycle exhaust along with the fresh taste of crimson barbecued vegetarian-meat noodles in your mouth as you savor the record of this musical performance.

These are recordings of improvised performances very loosely based on Indian raga performance conventions. An electronic drone begins the piece before a wildly modulating synth joins in. The synths pick up a meter with five pulses per bar, and then a synthesized drum begins to accompany them. The three instruments become progressively frenzied, with the piece ending right at the peak.

Barry Cullen, also known as bew, ran across Audiopaint, a freeware program which does a kind of additive synthesis from image files (http://www.nicolasfournel.com/audiopaint.htm). He created a series of backdrops, on top of which he added beats from drum machines, guitar, saxophone, trombone, and vocals. The recordings were each done in a single take through a variety of analog treatments: tape delay, valve amplifier, pre-1970s speaker cabinets, a Lorenzo organ from the garbage, and a fuzz pedal collection spanning four decades.

The original versions were remixed in 2007 for the3rd2nd.com. What results is a range of sounds from electroacoustic evolutions to pleasant processed settings of acoustic instruments that might even be called delicate and tender.

In addition to Cullen’s three mixes, Weakling and King and Aln vs. Cln have delivered remixes. Weakling and King’s track pulls groaning and noisy beats from bew’s material, while Aln vs. Cln’s track had “every sound treated digital>analogue>digital to avoid undue cleanliness.”

Signal Farming is the first set of works co-composed by Junichi Uesugi and Renick Bell. Junichi was originally Renick's English student, and they found they had similar musical taste. After their class ended, they began to work on some music together. Every session was interspersed with vegetarian meals or snacks, which had a particularly strong effect on Junichi.

They made this music in a very relaxed way – usually working one day per month. First, digital recordings with a pair of condenser mics were made in a three-hour session of Junichi improvising on electric guitar and viola, sometimes with a delay or distortion pedal, at a practice space in Nakano, Tokyo in May of 2007. Over the next year, the two edited, processed, and arranged those sounds a few minutes from Togoshi Ginza, near Gotanda. The work was done on a Linux DAW using Ardour and various other pieces of free audio software. That work resulted in these five tracks.

Before arranging the edited audio, some sketches were drawn on paper of the structure or feeling of the tracks. Junichi wondered if he and Renick shared the same understanding of what the sketches meant. Though every sketch sat on the desk as they were working, he wasn't always sure if they were going in the same direction.

Frequently (though progressively less often, thanks to the efforts of the software developers) the software crashed in the middle of editing, causing some edits to be redone multiple times. Some of that frustration and eventual satisfaction is captured in these tracks.

Every time, they lost their way or encountered headaches, such as crashes or digging through the original recordings. Finally, they could come to an agreement about which fragment to use or edit to make; that was satisfying.

080422j.mp3 (5:08)

Here are some of Muchos Pantaloons' thoughts from that season:

the first half is two pianicas playings pentatonics and hanamura playing the common upper-structure … at the latter half roles get reversed .. hanamura moves among 3 pentatonics and results into ryukyu lines which is a fake of sanshin instrument of “eisa” dancings … two pianica is playing the same role but not syncronized .. i mean .. each of them are independent instance of song1.class

this may sound like an ensemble but the structure is too simple … it's nothing more than a chord progression … maybe i tend to end up like this because i start from recording a cajon pattern? … i think i should get more serious about how to let several instances of songs move around their complicated orbits

watching sazi playing the pattern on his mvira found out that his left hand was keeping the same line … so i places the peti-pan on the left and glockenspiel on the right to play them together … couldn't get skillfull enough to put funny variations on the right so made up my mind to play the rhythm in a flabby way … was having somethang thai in mind .. kalimba part was composed to make harmony with pan .. hanamura is trying to take the pattern of these small instruments as a transition of common upper structure chords

went to the park with 7 empty bottles and did the multitrack recordings … this was to me like replacing each djembe to a bottle .. am planning to restructure song4 to somethang suitable to today's special (=random) tunings but still the methods are not declined … so while putting the vocals .. just tested things like “consentrate to one note and make a harmony to it” and “listen to the whole pattern and make a note on them”

wanted to do a multitrack thang with several vinyl-tubes … but no plans related to song4 … became flabby so added 2 etetric kalimbas as some spices … i like this but this has almost nothing to do with song4 … maybe will add some vocals or a plaintalk singings to this …

wanted to test what it would be if i went multitrack with my randomly tuned box-harp .. and this time thangs from the contact pickup went directly to the mtr … if i don't record some singings based on this pattern this will have nothing to do with song4

was wondering what would happen some groups of instances of a certain song behaved independently to each other .. came up with two coconut kalimba … sun-kalimba combined with pianica to repeat a pattern … moon-kalimba got together with andes … so this became somethang like a polytonal .. hanamura is acting a role as an independent instance

It has been said of this release by someone on prescription medication recovering from an illness “this is not music for someone suffering from side effects.”

Each of the works in this collection is an excerpt of improvisations with Takeda's personal Max/MSP patch recorded live in the spring of 2008. Over 15 days, improvisations were done using the patch to manipulate music previously recorded by Takeda.

The resulting sound was frequently very noisy but sometimes minimal. Occasionally the structure of the underlying music shines through. At other times, Takeda's performance on the patch creates some sense out of the noise.

Taken together, the sounds make for a challenging and stimulating listen spanning the range of warm ambience to digital chaos.

YATE has provided the3rd2nd.com with this improvisation, which is divided into five tracks.

Jason Landers says: “We were playing a mix of instruments through the arp and using the arp switches etc too. This was then tracked using a multi-track mixer and software.”

Can you tell me more about this session?

Rob: We both learned the fundamentals of electronic synthesis using an ARP2600 under the direction of Steven Paxton. His instruction has been very influential in how we think about and create music. ARPsession is dedicated to Dr. Paxton and is reminiscent of the sound sculptures we created in his lab many years ago.

Jason: I have always been fascinated with the arp, dating back to the first introduction to it in Paxton's Electro/Experimental studio 10 years prior. It was the first instrument of its type I ever used. Tapping into those old memories and combining new knowledge and instruments this session came to be. I think the coolest part of this instrument and this session is the ability to really feel like a mad scientist and create an experimental sound Frankenstein. So much is unplanned and very textural in both sound and the way of operating the ARP. It puts the experiment into experimental music.

- When did you record it?

Early 2006.

- Where did you record it?

In a bedroom studio in central Phoenix.

- How long did it take? And What was the process?

Rob: We recorded two multitrack sessions over the course of a couple of weeks or so. The initial session was recorded live. Then in the second session we refiltered parts of the first and overdubbed some tracks. The tracks were further refined in postproduction over a month long period.

Jason: After the live sessions, the tracks were mixed down and segmented into parts. The final mixing process took 4-5 sections of varying length and they were sequenced and overlayed together. No other effects or manipulation was added at this step.

- Where did the arp come from?

Rob: I got the arp from another local musician…He found it under a pile of used gear in the upstairs store room of a strange old music store in the middle of the desert.

Jason side note: The guy used to be in Machines of Loving Grace.

- Which other instruments were you playing into the arp?

Rob: Korg Electribe Drum machine, Maico hearing tester, guitars, Echoplex, various synths.

Jason: These all ran into the ARP from a mixer, then manipulated with the arp and the arp osc creating sound too. Then one arp out ran into a headrush multi out effect (tape delay emulator) and the other out direct unprocessed. Recorded stereo mix to computer using cubase.

- What were you guys thinking about when you made it?

Jason: The main experiment we were thinking about came about from remembering the audio input of the arp. We had also been thinking about experiments daisy chaining lots of instruments together in some way for a while. Both of these factors came together along with wanting to really make the focus the ARP. I believe another thought revolved around trying to make cold digital instruments have the sound of analog warmth.

- What goal did you have?

Rob: We set out to create a piece that would be an aesthetic sampling of the filtering and processing capabilities of the Arp 2600.

Jason: I would add the goal of making several forms (or instruments in this case) into one and then splitting that single form into various versions of itself.

The Third Second is a duo comprised of Jason Landers and Renick Bell. The Third Second began as a duo in 1998. Landers and Bell organized frequent improvisational recording sessions for almost a year. These recording sessions ranged from two to six people using a variety of instruments and sound sources. After a year of recording, the pair began to digitally manipulate the recordings. Those initial experiments became The Third Second’s debut album, Dynamic Adrenal Challenge, released in 1999.

YATE is an experimental ensemble based on the concept of free form instrumentation in an experimental electro acoustic realm. Founding members John, Jason, and Tim met at a jazz club in Lubbock, Texas in 2000. John and Tim were playing at an improv experimental performance, and Jason arrived at the show by chance. Jason and John knew each other from past school experiences and through John’s past work with The Third Second.

Soon after their meeting, they began jamming together as a trio and brought in other musicians at different times; however, the core group remained John, Tim, and Jason. In 2001, Jason and Tim moved to Phoenix and continued the YATE experiment, along with John.

In the summer of 2002, Robert Kilman moved to Phoenix and was introduced to Jason by Dr. Steven Paxton. Both had been students of Dr. Paxton at Texas Tech University, but had not known each other while in Lubbock. Rob began playing with Jason, John, and Tim very soon after their meeting. John soon left Phoenix and YATE once again became a trio.

Although various musicians play with YATE at different times, the core members are currently Rob Kilman, Jason Landers, and Tim Severson.

YATE’s releases include:
